Vortex in Donaustadt – “55,000 settlers face orgies with traffic fines!”

Date:

Vortex in Vienna’s Donaustadt: Residents now have to pay for parking, but can no longer stand in front of their house. They ask for solutions.

The waves are rising in the Esslinger allotment settlement “Himelteich”. Where the settlers parked for free for decades, they are now being punished despite the parking sticker. You should know: here on the outskirts of the city, the streets and narrow alleys have no sidewalks.

Ordinary parking spaces are far away and scarce. Residents parked their cars next to their houses. Half on the meadow, half on the asphalt. Nobody bothered, was tolerated. Park sheriffs now roam the area. Donaustadt introduced short-term parking zones in the spring.

Residents shows all motorists
“The uniformed so often punish because a neighbor is constantly suing everyone else,” explains KGV chairman Franz Eliska. In addition, the green strip along Röbblinggasse was screened off with concrete blocks. Only the bus station is omitted for boarding and alighting. “Mothers with prams now have to cross the street. It’s dangerous,” Eliska warns. District chief Ernst Nevrivy (SPÖ) replies: “In this specific case, a public green space was illegally closed and signposted as a private parking space for individual allotment gardeners. That is not possible.”

‘Concrete walls in a narrow alley are life-threatening’
FPÖ traffic spokesman Anton Mahdalik calls for a quick solution to the “heavenly pond”, where some 1,500 people live. In addition, the station of the 89A had to be defused. Mahdalik: “Concrete walls constrict the streets for no reason and are life-threatening.” The politician is also concerned about similar allotments.

The goal is to create many legal parking spaces
“There are dozens of such residential areas in the 22nd arrondissement with no sidewalks or with alleyways that are too narrow for regular parking.” District Chief Nevrivy did not miss this problem. He has instructed the traffic authority (MA 46) to check all streets in the district for ambiguities. “The goal is to create as many legal parking spaces as possible in the city on the Danube,” says Nevrivy.
