The top candidate of the ÖVP for the LA elections, Anton Mattle, surprised enemies and probably many (party) friends with his clear statement to the PVV. FP’s top candidate took Mattle’s statements calmly at first.
The exclusive report of the “Krone” that Anton Mattle, the top candidate of the Tyrolean People’s Party for the state elections, has ruled out any cooperation with the FPÖ Tyrol for the future, caused many waves. Mattle justified it by saying that “political style is very important to him. It’s also about how we interact with each other now. This polarization is something that puts me off because it doesn’t match my approach to political work which has evolved into the agitator of Herbert Kickl and the Tyrolean governor”.
You really have to give Mattle some respect, because it’s rather unusual for the ÖVP to firmly exclude a group as a possible partner in forming a government in the run-up to an election. She usually leaves all options open for purely tactical reasons.
You could also interpret a certain arrogance in Mattle’s approach. But: even if the ÖVP in Tyrol “shrinks” to 30 percent, it is probably still almost twice as strong as the next party, which could also be called the FPÖ.
The tactic behind the clear announcement
So why does Mattle make a statement that is surprising in its clarity? One can only speculate here. Maybe because he actually wants to signal the new ÖVP price? Perhaps because his type isn’t as tough as some of the others in this position and the personal attacks and under-attacks that have become more common lately don’t bounce off him, but hit him, which is what political opponents intend to do. However. Mattle is committed. And the voters know that.
It is also clear to the FP that if Mattle is still at the helm of the ÖVP and leading the government negotiations after September 25, he will sit on the hard boards of the opposition bench for the next five years.
FPÖ chairman Abwerzger took Mattle’s statements – at least outwardly – calmly. As is well known, he has been going “all in” for a long time, expecting Mattle to make history as the LH candidate on September 25th ÖVP and those of the second and third ÖVP series will report who see their hour coming and are important and feel powerful. There is no doubt in the ÖVP. Located mainly in the business wing, which also includes Mattle. There are those who have not been involved in decisions recently, are disappointed and would rather get into the coalition bed with the FPÖ than with the SPÖ or even with the Greens again.
As is well known, nothing can be ruled out in the end – in times when power and vanity are at stake.
