Based on Lenin – Kneissl causes a stir with a picture of Putin

Date:

Former Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl (FPÖ) caused a stir on Thursday with a tweet about the war in Ukraine. She posted a Russian meme based on a historical Lenin image. Europeans can be seen as poor peasants who appear as petitioners before Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin.

“February 2023. Putin receives a delegation from the EU,” reads the caption. “One day the time will come for diplomacy, for real conversations,” wrote the former foreign minister.

Malicious Comments
The tweet received many malicious responses within a few hours. Kneissl was repeatedly told that she danced with Putin at her wedding and that she was on Rosneft’s board of directors. The Russian oil company is one of the largest energy companies in the world and is closely associated with Putin. The current director, Igor Sechin, was deputy head of the Kremlin’s presidential administration.

The tweet was criticized by Moscow Financial Times bureau chief Max Seddon and deputy editor-in-chief of Bild newspaper. “The fact that you could become foreign minister in Austria is uncanny,” wrote Paul Ronzheimer. Other users accused Kneissl of having no morals and of being corrupt. She was asked if she had received money from Putin.

little defended
Despite all the criticisms, the posted photo of Kneissl was occasionally defended. For example, one person pointed out that the original picture was painted in 1950 to show how caring Lenin was for ordinary people. He listened to the Russian peasants. The communist Lenin came to power after the Russian Revolution in 1917 and is now associated with numerous human rights violations, among other things.

Karin Kneissl was foreign minister in Austria until 2019 and now lives in Lebanon, according to media reports. She works as an author and Middle East expert, among other things.
