Government negotiates – military and civil servants should get more money

Date:

The ÖVP and the Greens are currently negotiating a substantial increase in the compensation for military and community service. The goal is an increase to the minimum income level of EUR 978, says green defense spokesman David Stögmüller. The ÖVP confirms the negotiations, but the People’s Party links its approval of the package to the green agreement for the multi-year budget path for the federal army.

Soldiers and civil servants currently receive 362 euros per month, plus bonuses and food allowances. Such low incomes are hit hard by inflation. That is why more money is planned for the men from next year, Stögmüller explained to “Standard” and “Pers”.

ÖVP: No raise without the other
The ÖVP, in particular Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner, would also welcome an increase, but also wants significantly more financial resources for the army. The budget is to increase to 1.5 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) by 2027, and the road towards it is currently being negotiated for the coming years. The army budget currently stands at 0.6 percent of GDP. One raise is not possible for the ÖVP without the other. Negotiations are now underway with the coalition partner.

Exactly, conscripts currently receive a monthly allowance of 238 euros, plus a base salary of 124 euros. If they are on duty – for example at the border – there is an added bonus. Civil servants receive a basic salary of 362 euros – and in addition often a meal allowance of up to 16 euros per day. The federal government pays part of the fee – how much depends on the facility.
