Peschorn loaded – “Lawyer of the Republic” in the ÖVP-U-Commission

Date:

On Thursday, the ÖVP’s investigative committee focused mainly on the “lawyer of the republic”, the head of financial prosecutor Wolfgang Peschorn. The opposition hopes to gain insight into various investigations by the former interior minister – for example in the Ibiza procedure or also on events at the Ministry of Finance. Peschorn was also the intermediary of the Ministry of Finance in submitting files to Ibiza’s Commission of Inquiry.

As SPÖ faction leader Jan Krainer explained, Peschorn was Minister of the Interior during the “Shredder Affair” and at the beginning of the calamities between the “Soko Tape” and the WKStA. He was also involved in the Ministry of Finance’s internal audit report on the inquiry affair and the failure to provide data to the U-committee. For example, the FPÖ is interested in what damage the republic has suffered from the so-called Beinschab tool and whether there have been checks in the other departments as well, as FPÖ MP Christian Ries emphasized.

First Respondent from the Presidential Office
For Peschorn, the head of the legal group in the chancellery of Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, Georg Frölichsthal, was invited to provide information. The ÖVP invited him because he was said to have expressed skepticism about the execution in the Ministry of Finance because the files had not been delivered to the Ibizan Commission of Inquiry.

While the other political groups do not expect any significant knowledge gains from the investigation, the ÖVP wants to question the role of the presidential office in submitting files and whether it has been politically instrumentalised, said ÖVP faction leader Andreas Hanger.
