Senate calls for measures to prevent more migrant deaths in Bidasoa River

Date:

The Senate majority has approved a motion, tabled by EH Bildu and amended by the PSOE, expressing its “concern for the humanitarian situation” experienced in the conflict between the Spanish and French states.

the plenary of Senate supported this Wednesday by a majority asking the government of Spain “effective” and “as soon as possible” measuresagreed with the European authorities “and especially with France”, to Preventing “New Tragedies” of Migrants on the internal borders of the European Union, especially on the river Bidasoa.

The majority of the Senate, without the support of the PP and Vox, has approved a motion tabled by EH Bildu and amended by the PSOEshows his “concern about the humanitarian situation“Those people live on the border between Spain and France in Irun, where nine migrants have died, seven in 2021 and two so far this year, trying to cross the Bidasoa River to Hendaye.”

The motion also calls for, together with the French authorities, to improve “common mechanisms that avoid any form of discriminatory treatment on the basis of race, color, origin or identity, contrary to the case law of the European Court of Rights of the Man”.

The socialist amendment deleted from the original text the request to create, in consultation with the European authorities, “safe humanitarian corridors” for all migrants and refugees on this border, which PNV senator Nerea Ahedo regretted, who, despite his support for the motion, he believed this measure would have helped avoid the “drama” happening in Irun, which “is not acceptable and we cannot normalize it”.

EH Bildu: “A trap for migrants”

The senator of EH Bildu Idurre Bideguren has stated that this border has become a “trap” for migrants, mainly from Africa via the Canary Islands, who try to cross the river Bidasoa “by whatever means”. to avoid the controls set up by France.

Bideguren has described what is happening in this area as “nonsense, a scandal and a disgrace in a democratic European state”, declaring that “the right to move is denied, against the law”, thereby “shattering European values” .

Socialist Alfonso Gil has stated in his defense of the amendment that “the transit of migrants in Europe must be guaranteed because they are human rights”, and has considered internal controls in the EU, in this case France’s between Hendaia and Irun, “an anomaly we must correct”.

PP MP Ana Camins agrees with Vox, pointing out that “EH Bildu, far from concerned about the focus on migrants, has only one solution: that they leave, that they do not stay in Irun”; has confirmed that “this proposal is only trying to mislead”, and has reminded the proposing group that it has voted against a PP initiative to provide more resources to the troops accompanying the migrants trying to reach the Canary Islands, ” where they have killed 4000 people”.
