So far, 12,316 voting cards have been digitally requested for the federal presidential election on October 9. This was announced by Minister of the Interior Gerald Karner and State Secretary for Digitization Florian Tursky (both ÖVP) on Thursday.
It is possible to apply online via the “Digitales Amt” app or the website www.oesterreich.gv.at
Online registration possible until Tuesday before the elections
This year, for the first time, it is possible to digitally request an absentee vote from a municipality for the federal presidential elections via an app. Online registration is possible until the Tuesday before the election, in the night of 4 to 5 October (midnight), registration will be deactivated again in the app and on the website. This is to ensure that absent ballots can be delivered on time.
Application also possible via the municipality
Anyone who needs an absence note, but prefers to request it in the traditional way, can do so directly at the municipality – orally or in writing. The condition is that you contact the municipality in whose electoral register you are registered (based on the electoral register). The application can be made by post, by fax, possibly also by e-mail or via the website of the municipality. For this you can – as before – also use the website https://www.wahlkartenanmeldung.at; from there one goes to many (but not all) churches. You can request the tickets since July 7 – the day the election was announced.
You can request the absentee vote in writing until the Wednesday before the election (5 October), orally until the Friday before the election day (12 noon). It should be noted that the ballots must be received by the district election authorities no later than on Election Day, i.e. 5:00 PM on 9 October.
With a ballot paper, eligible voters can vote by mail or go to the polls on election day at a location other than their primary residence. Eligible voters who moved after the deadline (August 9) and do not wish to vote in the “old” municipality also need a voting card. If you deregister after the deadline, you will remain on the electoral roll of your old main residence.
