ÖVP faction leader Andreas Hanger does not see himself in the role of general secretary of the People’s Party. After Laura Sachslehner’s departure (see video above), he was traded in as her potential successor in various media reports. But he sees himself busy with his “current tasks”. There are currently no talks with him in this direction. However, he didn’t want to rule out anything completely.
“Right now it’s all just speculation,” Hanger said. He is convinced that party leader Karl Nehammer will make the right decision and will announce it shortly. Hanger, however, has no great ambitions for this position.
In addition to Hanger, Kurt Egger, secretary general of the ÖVP Economic Association, is one of the favorites. Until there is clarity about the successor, Alexander Proell will continue to lead the affairs of the federal ÖVP.
According to reports, the state directors of the ÖVP will meet in Vienna tomorrow, Wednesday. It remains to be seen whether a (provisional) decision will be taken at this meeting.
Video: Sachslehner resigns after coalition dispute
“Can’t take the course anymore”
Sachslehner resigned on Saturday. She can no longer support the party’s current stance on asylum issues, she said in a “personal statement” (see video above). She wants to remain a Viennese ÖVP municipal councilor and member of the state parliament. On Friday, she so escalated a coalition dispute over the climate bonus for asylum seekers that it was called off by club boss August Wöginger.
