The rental e-scooters are shut down in the winter in Linz and other cities. However, the enthusiasm is limited. The energy potential of 400 households quoted by the MFG is also questionable.
MFG went public on Wednesday with an unconventional proposal. Since rental e-scooters in Linz alone supposedly require as much electricity as 400 households, they should be banned at least in the winter half year, which would save 100,000 kilowatt hours, the argument goes.
doubts about the numbers
However, energy experts cannot understand MFG’s calculations. Because an average household consumes 3600 kilowatt hours per year. If you multiply that by 400, that would be 1.4 million kilowatt hours. And: With one kilowatt hour, an e-scooter can travel 60 to 100 kilometers, depending on the design. Conversely, this means that you could drive about ten million kilometers with the 100,000 kilowatt-hours deployed by MFG.
Providers don’t understand
Given these numbers, Marlene Johler, general manager for Austria at scooter supplier Tier, can only smile. “Our aircraft certainly do not travel ten million kilometers.” In principle, however, she cannot understand the discussions and sees the whole as a populist political demand. “With a ban, people would also lose their jobs,” she notes. The scooters are also very efficient. “We have a 600-watt battery that lasts up to ten days,” emphasizes Marlene Johler in an interview with “Krone”.
