The Styrian ÖVP will meet on Saturday in the Stadthalle in Graz to elect the new chairman of the state party Christopher Drexler. On Friday, former governor Hermann Schützenhöfer focused on leaving politics.
Hermann Schützenhöfer devoted most of his life to politics. For this, he was honored on Friday evening at the congress of the state party – with an image film, much applause and even more speaking time.
In a lengthy speech, Schützenhöfer looked back on successes and failures (“When we lost the governor in 2005…”) and warned: “Joy of harm, anger, cynicism or hysterical cheering are not good counselors.” He just kept crying.
Prosperity despite crises
“We live in an unprecedented living situation. The cities, the municipalities, the infrastructure,” says Schützenhöfer. “But I’m often not sure whether intellectual prosperity has kept pace with material prosperity.” For many, it’s all about their “own sensitivities”.
Schützenhöfer asked the assembled delegates: “Don’t forget the top performers. The entrepreneurs are not our enemy, but role models.” In addition, one must “take care of the middle class, which has already become the cash cow of the nation”.
He concluded his speech with the words: “Dear friends, do well and remember, it is almost a gift from God to live in this privileged place on earth, Styria. Take a good look at Styria.”
Nehammer will bring “better times”.
The former governor found optimistic words for Chancellor Karl Nehammer: “With him, better times will come for the People’s Party.”
After the federal (“So many viruses in the room, but we don’t care”) and the Tyrolean party congress (“Alcohol or psychotropic drugs”), there was great tension as to whether the chancellor would afford another scandal. However, that did not happen – Nehammer congratulated Schützenhöfer and praised Drexler.
