The parties in pictures – Analysis: Tyrolean election campaign on the straight

Date:

Next Sunday there will be elections in Tyrol, on Wednesday evening the big elephant round with all the top candidates will take place in the “Krone” studio in Vienna. For the final, the “Krone” again asked the famous political scientist Prof. Christian Traweger of the University of Innsbruck. How does he see the parties and their top candidates a few days before the elections?

People’s Party: “The ÖVP’s election campaign is completely in line with the type of top candidate Anton Mattle: calm and emotionless. The ‘newbie’ who hardly messes with others is the center of attention!” If you look back at the latest surveys (in 2018 the Tyrolean VP came in at 44 percent – and that’s how they are measured), it was 30 percent three months ago and even dropped to 25 percent a month ago. This decline has now come to an end and there is even a trend reversal. “Despite everything, there will be heavy losses at VP, with 30 to 33 percent possible!”

SPÖ: “The Tyrolean Reds with their top contender Georg Dornauer have now deviated from their initially somewhat aggressive course regarding a stoppage in Tyrol and are holding on to the bond, apart from a few cautious verbal attacks on the subject of young farmers. Dornauer, who apparently can and does anything, definitely wants to join the state government – you don’t want to mess with the bigger coalition partner possible. A hard, aggressive election campaign would not be productive.”

FPÖ: “She is conducting a very aggressive election campaign and does not miss a single blunder. Markus Abwerzger shoots – practically like a one-man show – on Mattle. After all, he has nothing to lose, as both the ÖVP and the SPÖ have ruled out governing the FPÖ together for the next five years!”

Vegetable: “The Greens are also conducting an aggressive election campaign with their leader Gebi Mair – you hardly notice the leadership duo. Also because it is suspected that the coming legislature will have a greater chance of nagging down from the balcony of the opposition and thus easily promising billions of suns. The allegations against young farmers seemed clumsy and reflected an almost offended response from the Greens after a broken coalition marriage.”

List Fritz/Neo’s: “There is one goal for both: co-management! The Fritz list, with Andrea Haselwanter-Schneider and Markus Sint at the top, focuses on the people and their problems in Tyrol, puts the citizen first and clearly shows that one wants to participate in government – but without the ÖVP. Neos boss Dominik Oberhofer sells himself as an economist who naturally also wants to deal with the pink core themes of education and housing. Both lists are on a cozy course, which certainly won’t put them at a disadvantage in the battle for a place in the future coalition. But you may only need one of the two lists to rule if you see the SPÖ as a set.”
