Sortu’s general secretary, Arkaitz Rodriguezhas called on this Sunday to “raise the flag of active hope” and “fight in the streets and institutions to face adversity”.

Rodríguez referred in these terms during the act held this Sunday by Sortu in the town of Gipuzkoan Toulouse under the motto “Nehork ez gave Eguri itxaropena kenduko” (No one will take away the hope of the dawn).

Sortu’s leader stressed the “importance of regaining active hope to face the challenges we face”. “That hope gives us the fight,” he defended.

For this reason, he encouraged the militants to “continue to fight for the national and social liberation of Euskal Herria”. Rodríguez, who in his speech recalled the “anti-fascist” militants of ETA Jon walls Txiki and Angel Otaegipointed out that “they would be the object of institutional tributes in any European country, but here their memory is being criminalized”.

In this sense, he believes that this “is a sign that the democratic break with Francoismand pointed out that “his dreams and his struggle are still alive” and “today thanks to the generation of” Txiki and Otaegi, the situation of our people is much better.”

“Thanks to their struggles, we have achieved rights and freedoms that were unimaginable at the time,” he emphasized, adding that “without a doubt we are closer to our goals.”

Rodríguez has emphasized the “need to reverse the special situation we find ourselves in, such as the climate emergency, the widening gap between rich and poor, the end of the era of cheap fossil fuels and the political involution and the threat of fascism”.

“The struggle for sovereignty must face all these challenges,” he stated, adding that “there are people responsible for this situation, with names and surnames”. “Those responsible are the IBEX-35, the arms industry, the vulture funds, the bank, Iberdrola, Petronor, the economic and financial elites,” he said.

Sortu’s leader has maintained that “the ones responsible are the neoliberal policies applied for decades and capitalism”. In this context, Rodríguez, “in the face of resignation”, has pointed out that Sortu “raises the flag of hope; not of a naive hope, not of a banal hope, no”. “We raise the flag of a active hope; the flag of organization and struggle; the flag of TxikiOtaegi and so many others,” he said.

According to him, “only a well-organized people can achieve their goals” and the Basque people are “determined to achieve theirs”. In addition, he has chosen to “get this country on its feet” and “activate” it to meet the current “colossal social and economic challenges”.
