Memento when voting – Tiroler Watschen: Did you really understand?

Date:

We understood! After the worst election result in party history in the Tyrolean state elections, the ÖVP tried to show a willingness to be self-critical. But do our politicians – of all parties – actually understand the sometimes desperate messages from the population, showing the results of the ORF election day survey?

There is one challenge against which politics will be measured in the coming months. Is everyday life still affordable for us? In Tyrol, 80 percent say it is becoming increasingly difficult to pay current bills.

Inflation and rising prices – that is, rising prices – was by far the most discussed topic. If politicians do not find a cross-party counter-recipe here, it will not only be cold and pitch dark in Austria in terms of energy.

generation gap
Among the “old people” – people and especially pensioners over the age of 60 – the ÖVP in Tyrol would still have won an absolute majority. At the same time, however, three quarters think the younger generation will have it worse in the future. As we all get older and there are fewer young voters due to low birth rates, electoral successes are usually managed in some way at the expense of young people. In the long run, of course, this is headed towards the abyss.

feared a split in society
Voters and politicians of all parties fear growing division in society, not just because of the generation gap. In the electorate, depending on party preferences, two-thirds, three-quarters and more of all Tyroleans expressed such fears. Elsewhere it is hardly different. If everyone is concerned, why isn’t anyone doing anything about it? Worrying about polarization and berating the other party in the next breath is illogical nonsense.

The credibility of the parties is at stake
No party in Tyrol cited credibility as the main electoral motive by more than one in ten voters. In other words, at least nine out of ten people don’t even think the party they vote for is particularly credible. It is right and not surprising that less than half of politicians trust them. If, instead of standing sentences, there are finally no convincing countermeasures, then politicians have not understood it at all.
