The agreement is a continuation of the previous one and includes 33 new measures. All parties with representation have signed the pact, except the Popular Party.
All political parties with representation in the Bilbao City Council, with the exception of the Popular Party, signed on Monday 15 July the Bilbao Citizen Security Pact 2024-2027. This will therefore continue the previous one, including 33 new measures.
The signing ceremony was attended by, among others, Bingen Zupiria, security councillor of the Basque Government, and Juan María Aburto, mayor of the city.
This agreement is extended with 33 new measures. These include the preparation of an investigation into crime in Bilbao, the implementation of cameras on officers, the opening of a new police station in Santutxu and the training and maintenance of personnel.
The municipal council assures that the pact revolves around the safety of citizens for coexistence; with the principles of equality, dignity, solidarity, social cohesion and the protection of vulnerable groups as a priority.
The PP, absent
The only party that has not signed the new Citizen Security Pact is the Popular Party.
Although the news comes as a surprise, Aburto wanted to stress that he “respectfully accepts” this absence. “I do not understand this absence as a sign that it is not possible to work together; I hope we can work together, because safety is a priority, I hope for everyone,” said the mayor.
Positive reactions
The other parties represented have indicated their agreement with the agreement as executed.
The PSE-EE stressed that the parties reached an agreement “united for the common good” and “to promote the protection of citizens”.
EH Bildu, for his part, agrees with what was stated by other political parties and has stated that “security is the pillar of well-being, which is much more than policing” in itself.
Finally, Elkarrekin Bilbao wanted to emphasize that this agreement “will improve people’s lives” and stressed that the aim is “to evolve towards a safer city.”
