After the state elections – who can go with whom? Tyrolean Coalition Poker Begins

Date:

After the elections, the coalition negotiations are ahead: the Tyrolean People’s Party, which had given a memo to voters, will hold exploratory talks with all parties except the FPÖ on the formation of the new state government. That was the result of a state party leadership of the ÖVP on the day after the elections. All potential partners indicated that they were prepared to do so. The Liberals demanded to be involved in the negotiations. But the VP boss Anton Mattle repeatedly refused.

The People’s Party ended the state elections with a black eye. Despite a near double-digit loss, the Blacks remain in the comfortable position of choosing between a two-way variant with SPÖ or FPÖ or a three-way coalition with partners from the list Fritz, Greens and NEOS. VP boss Anton Mattle, who is likely to become the future governor, again ruled out the option with the PVV on Monday.

After the meeting of the state party executive, he emphasized: “There are talks about cooperation with the government with all parties except the PVV. Partisan cooperation is one thing, government cooperation another. We show a clear lead there.”

“We don’t want to waste time”
Mattle wants to start polls with the parties that entered the state parliament as soon as possible, probably as early as Tuesday, although no dates were set on Monday night: “We don’t want to waste time,” the VP boss emphasized.

World Cup chairman against coalition with NEOS
In the run-up to the event, Chamber of Commerce chairman Christoph Walser almost strayed from the party line. Even before the board, he ruled out a three-way variant with NEOS. However, this would mean that the ÖVP’s room for maneuver would be limited to a coalition with the SPÖ or an alliance with List Fritz and the Greens, which is unlikely.

Dornauer is still waiting
In any case, the Social Democrats have the best cards for government participation – even if the election target (20 percent and more) was missed and only a minimal gain of 0.23 percentage points was achieved. Following the state party leadership, SP party leader Georg Dornauer announced on Monday his willingness to explore with the ÖVP. Whether a coalition is “meaningful” depends on its content.

“We will orientate ourselves on the program and see if the ÖVP actually wants to help the country move forward”, the Reds top still waited. A clear rejection came again to a three-party coalition with red participation, such as an alliance with ÖVP and NEOS. “That’s out of the question,” Dornauer explained curtly.

Greens: “Not in pole position”
The “steering committee” of the Tyrolean Greens, which – like the ÖVP – had lost money, unanimously ordered the top duo Gebi Mair and Petra Wohlfahrtstätter on Monday for the upcoming exploratory talks. “In the coming days, we will enter into discussions with those parties with which a coalition is possible and we will explore the extent to which there is substantive overlap and the willingness for in-depth discussions,” says Petra Wohlfahrtstätter after the meeting.

The Greens would enter into talks with NEOS, List Fritz and ÖVP with “realistic expectations”. “The post-election situation does not see us in pole position. We stand behind the 31,568 voters we support the Green positions and three key demands we made during the election campaign. In Tyrol, one billion is needed for solar energy in Tyrol, a legal right to childcare and a transparency package,” emphasized Gebi Mair.

The ball is in the hands of the ÖVP, “no sidecar”
The NEOS are still ready to take their responsibility. Head of state Dominik Oberhofer met the leaders of the Greens and List Fritz on Monday, but also emphasized that the ball is now in the hands of the ÖVP. You don’t want to “force yourself on anyone”.

The Fritz list, the actual winner of the election with almost a doubling of the vote share, left all options open. “Of course we’re going to talk. The voters eventually said you need twice as much List Fritz in this country,” party leader Andrea Haselwanter-Schneider said. “But we’re not a classic sidecar,” she added.

Libertarians on the sidelines
The FPÖ was dissatisfied that the ÖVP only wanted to talk to them about parliamentary affairs and not about a coalition. State party leader Markus Abwerzger called on Mattle for “concrete, serious coalition negotiations”.
