Resignation demanded – border controls: SPÖ and FPÖ seek “distraction”

The federal government is now stepping up the fight against the smuggling mafia and is now reintroducing controls at the border with Slovakia. The focus checks, initially scheduled for ten days, will begin at midnight on Thursday. The SPÖ and the FPÖ doubt the usefulness of this measure.

Viennese social councilor Peter Hacker (SPÖ) sharply criticized the Minister of the Interior in a conversation with the APA on Wednesday. This is responsible for the fact that countless refugees have been repeatedly stranded at Vienna’s train stations. The federal government is responsible for the first steps of the asylum procedure. It is unacceptable to interrupt the initial interrogation of those affected and then forward them without support or money for food and clothing.

Hacker demands care for people at the border
Hacker called on the federal government to either provide people at the border — i.e., shelter during the various days of the proceedings — or to organize their onward travel if the investigation was actually interrupted and continued in another location.

Similar criticism came from the Deputy Governor of Upper Austria, Manfred Haimbuchner (FPÖ). He pointed out that people who had just arrived in Austria were also sent to the registry office in Wels in Upper Austria. “The resentment in Wels is already great, the registration office is manned to the limit and the population is restless,” he also lamented “the incompetence of the government”. FPÖ security spokesman Hannes Amesbauer spoke of a “deceitful package” in a broadcast. He called for the implementation of a consistent “no-way policy”, including the suspension of the right to asylum and the legalization of rejections.

Request to resign from Burgenland
The Burgenland SPÖ considers Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) a “cheap diversionary campaign” and “turquoise show politics”. Regional manager Roland Fürst pointed out that 600 people had crossed the border into Burgenland last Saturday: “Karner is ignoring the situation and seriously believes that his anti-marketing strategy can keep the criminal smugglers from their business. That is naive and gross negligence,” Fürst said in a statement. a broadcast and called on Karner to resign.
