The Spanish government will soon begin the round of meetings with the parties to approve the 2023 accounts in an environment marked by economic uncertainty in the coming months. EH Bildu’s spokesman in the Congress of Deputies, Mertxe Aizpurua, has argued that EH Bildu’s condition in these negotiations will be clear: “progress on social issues”. In this sense, he indicated that, although they have not started the meetings to negotiate the points at this point, they have maintained “first contacts” with those responsible for the negotiating table. As he has said, “one of the most important aspects of the current Spanish government is the opportunity it offers to deepen the social sphere”, although he added that “it is not making as much progress as we would like”.

interviewed in Euskadi Irrati, Aizpurua has relied on the government partners – PSOE and United We Can – to conclude the budget deal by the end of this week in order to start negotiations with the rest of the parties as soon as possible. “We haven’t exactly started on the items yet, but I can anticipate that we will ask to delve into social issues, while we will ask for various items for Euskal Herria. In addition, we have to take into account that it will are certainly the last budgets of the legislature. Next year, the last year of the legislature, there will probably be an expansion of the bills. For this reason, it is very important to close many cases now,” he added.

The deputy of EH Bildu has also referred to the tax reform announced by the Minister of Finance and Public Administration, María Jesús Montero. In this sense, he believed that the conditions of the tax on large fortunes are not sufficient: “the threshold of 3 million euros is too high” and “many large fortunes will be free”. Also with regard to the taxes intended to be applied to energy companies and banks, he considered “essential long-term structural measures”. “Short-term measures will soften the situation at some point, but they won’t fix it,” he added.

Finally, regarding the crisis that the government of Catalonia is going through, Aizpurua pointed out that “despite the fact that the differences are very clear”, we must focus on the “road traveled” to sovereignty and on “all that “Laid is very solid and that will pay off,” he said.
