Statements by Lehendakari Urkullu on the Return of the Emeritus King to Spain

Date:

The lehendakari has advocated the republicanization of the monarchy so that no one can enjoy inviolability and practice transparency and fairness.

Before the arrival of Juan Carlos I in Spain, the lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu complained that the emeritus king continues to “protect himself in his inviolability” to continue to conduct “an exercise of haggling with justice”. In addition, he believes that despite the initiation of a judicial investigation, he should still explain his behavior to society.

In statements to the media upon his arrival in the Basque parliament, de Lehendakari called for “a republicanization of the monarchy” so that no one can enjoy immunity. “If we are all truly equal before the law, we should all do an exercise in transparency and fairness.”

On the other hand, he has affirmed that “it is imperative to be accountable to society for everything that has been done”.

Asked if he was in Sanxenxo (Galicia) for the first time to attend a regatta, he joked that “haggling is the exercise Juan Carlos I likes the most”.
