A few days before the federal presidential elections, the Tyrolean ÖVP club president Jakob Wolf discussed a change from the previous election method. According to Wolf, one could and must ask whether the Federal President should in future be directly elected by the people, or whether indirect elections could also be held – thereby bringing the example of Germany into play.
There, the Federal Assembly elects the Federal President every five years. “For me, an election method like our northern neighbors would certainly be worth considering, because the effort for such an election would be limited,” Wolf explained to the APA. He also constantly hears from the population why it is not possible to proceed in the same way in Austria as in the Federal Republic.
Club boss wants to start a discussion
The president of the black club pointed out that Austria also has the constitutional body of the Federal Assembly, which consists of the members of the National Council and the members of the Federal Council. Wolf emphasized that it was about starting a discussion about the future settlement. If there is the political will for change, a constitutional convention is certainly needed.
Incumbent Support
As Wolf explained recently, he will vote for incumbent Alexander Van der Bellen in this election. According to the club chairman, he knows the Federal President personally and is deeply convinced that he is the right chairman in the current difficult times. In addition, Van der Bellen Austria has survived many crises very safely in the past.
The ÖVP had made no recommendation for Van der Bellen before the elections. A number of black grandees spoke out for him.
