The ideologically steadfast and combative Styrian MP Werner Murgg is increasingly becoming a crucial test for the KPÖ. After all, he was able to apologize on Tuesday. It concerns the expressions “Punch Nations” and “Cripple Nations”.
“That’s why all these puppet nations in Yugoslavia, for example, are puppet nations. Well, Serbia remains. But Montenegro, Slovenia and finally the Baltic republics […]. They call the Hegemon every day about what needs to be done.”
This statement was made by Leobner KPÖ MP Werner Murgg at an event organized by the “Anti-Imperialist Coordination” (AIK) in Aflenz in Upper Styria – it almost went down in the headlines surrounding the 64-year-old (“paralyzed nation “) view of Ukraine. After pressure within the party mounted, a partial apology was issued on Tuesday from Upper Styria, which had also sparked strong criticism with trips to Belarus and the Donbass.
“This choice of words cannot be justified”
“In an informal discussion on September 10, 2022, I used the term Punch and Judy nations. This choice of words cannot be justified. I do not hesitate to offer my unconditional apologies,” said an official statement from the Styrian KPÖ on Tuesday afternoon.
As for Ukraine, too, Murgg somewhat concedes, even though he emphasizes that he did not describe the war-torn country as a “paralyzed nation” – “I said the exact opposite. Nevertheless, the mere use of that term was a mistake. I fully understand that my choice of words was perceived as offensive. I am very sorry!”
