In government position – Dornauer has to do without the mayor’s office

Date:

The black-red coalition in Tyrol should be in place before the end of October. The in-depth negotiations will be launched on Tuesday. If everything goes according to plan, Anton Mattle (ÖVP) will become the new governor and SP boss Georg Dornauer – at least that is to be expected – his deputy. The latter would also have consequences for the municipality of Sellrain! Because with a government position Dornauer would have to give up his mayorship there.

In the 2016 municipal and mayoral elections, Georg Dornauer won 54.5 percent from his competitor Benedikt Singer and became head of the approximately 1,400-strong municipality of Sellrain. In this spring’s elections, the Tyrolean SPÖ party leader had it even easier. Because he had no opponent, he was automatically elected mayor for six years.

“Constitutionally Incompatible”
But that term could soon end abruptly. That is when Dornauer and his Social Democrats enter the Tyrolean state government. De Sellrainer is likely to become deputy governor — and this position, as Dornauer himself emphasized at a press conference in Innsbruck on Tuesday, is “unfortunately constitutionally incompatible” with the office of mayor.

The government should be in place by October 25
Late Tuesday morning, Vice President Mattle and Dornauer announced the timetable for the coalition negotiations. The starting signal will be given on Tuesday afternoon. There will be a total of ten negotiating teams on a wide range of topics – from housing, health, work, transport, education to finance. The current goal is for the coalition memorandum to be ready on 25 October and the cabinet team to be presented.

The municipality of Sellrain should therefore already start looking for a successor for the mayor.
