The scent of freedom lasted only a short while, as the return of the mask requirement is back in the room. Dear politicians: Not again! Please give us back our personal responsibility after almost three years of the corona pandemic!
Because by now everyone should understand that masks are useful, that vaccination protects against heavy treatments and that it is better to stay at home if you are sick. After the last difficult years, this message has really reached everyone. Why do we still need a mask requirement? The Austrians are mature enough!
We must now rely on our own responsibility!
That is why we must slowly but surely start to rely on people again to take responsibility for themselves. We adhered to the measures long enough and accepted hardship. Now it’s time to say that everyone has to decide for themselves whether to wear a mask or not.
Why paternalism?
Yes, the fact that the number of infections is rising again is a fact that needs to be closely monitored. Experts should especially assess how bad the current disease course is. Even if you don’t wear a mask, a point falls from your crown: a duty would cause frustration and pour fuel into the already tense social fire. So why the paternalism?
What could be fairer than the mask requirement…
So far, Vienna is the only state to take a more cautious approach. Face masks are still mandatory on public transport, but despite the regulations, those who refuse or forget are part of the everyday public image due to a lack of controls. So why not give the passengers the freedom to decide whether to wear a mask or not? That would at least be fair and consistent!
Urgent appeal to our politicians
The government appears to be in disagreement on the issue of a comeback of the mask requirement. The Minister of Health is still reluctant, the heads of state are cautious. Therefore, at this time, the urgent appeal to all our responsible parties: Please don’t wear masks anymore!
