Many bottlenecks – Schallenberg: “The gap in the EU cannot be overlooked”

Date:

Four EU countries are completely and two partially mentally at war, while other EU Member States are able to avoid war. However, the Union must not allow itself to be divided, “otherwise we would have already lost,” Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg said in Berlin on Thursday.

The EU is closely watched, in Moscow and Beijing, but also in Africa, Asia and Latin America. However, he did not want to hide the fact that it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain unity in the EU. “A mental divide is increasingly visible in Europe.”

Crisis-weary population
Against the background of the sensitive, increasingly volatile mood of the population and massive crisis fatigue, the coming months will be exciting and decisive in foreign, economic, financial and European policies. Such votes must be intercepted in democracies. Austria and Germany have similar expectations among the population. “How the EU acts in the coming months will have a major impact on the perception and global standing of the Western world,” the minister told journalists.

Schallenberg: ‘Don’t miss the target with sanctions against Russia’
In Berlin, Schallenberg warned against exceeding the bar with the sanctions. They should not boomerang back to the West, but should work in Russia. Moreover, one should not take 144 million Russians into clandestine with a visa freeze. He also does not believe in adopting a cancel-cultural attitude towards Russia and its culture.

On migration, more could be done on the European side, Schallenberg said in Berlin. For example, he does not understand why Lithuania’s external border with Belarus is left only to Lithuanian taxpayers, while Lithuania protects the Schengen area at the same time.

Criticism of Putin
The fact that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been making a clear link between the gas supplies and the sanctions for a few weeks is clear proof that the sanctions really work. “Putin is making a serious strategic mistake with this,” Schallenberg said. “It proves that contracts have no value to him.” This will damage the credibility of Russian companies in the long term. “Crossing this red line is also seen as a signal in Beijing and Delhi.”

The reason for the visit to Berlin is a conference of the business association “Die Junge Unternehmer” (The Young Entrepreneurs) at which Schallenberg gave a speech.
