Hofburg election – mood barometer: there will be no second round

Date:

The federal presidential elections are in a week: Alexander Van der Bellen is the favourite. Now it’s time to mobilize the followers.

Alexander Van der Bellen loves campaigning, from mountain hikes to sausage tasting. His team is in a good mood, but a week before the elections, they are not quite sure of the presidential case. The magic and trembling word is ‘voter mobilization’. That is also the only potential problem that political analyst and pollster Christoph Haselmayer (IFDD) sees. “All polls show that Van der Bellen wins on the first ballot.” That he gets more than 50 percent. Otherwise there would be a drain. “Mobilization determines the choice,” says Haselmayer. Especially because many from the SPÖ and ÖVP camps did not want to vote. In the absence of own candidates.

The competitors? Walter Rosenkranz (FPÖ) is in second place according to polls – with 16 to 18 percent. He is the opponent of the establishment that Van der Bellen stands for. And according to the blue DNA as an opponent of the sanctions against Russia. Other candidates, such as former “Krone” columnist and bestselling author Tassilo Wallentin, are likely to compete for third place.

Pollsters cautious: “snapshot”
Haselmayer remains cautious: “This is a snapshot. And at the last election in 2016, the opinion poll was completely wrong.” At the time, FPÖ candidate Norbert Hofer narrowly failed in the second round against Van der Bellen.
