„krone“: Professor, Styrian Landtag representative Werner Murgg describes Ukraine as a “crippled nation” and all former Yugoslav states – except Serbia – as “puppet nations”. How do you assess such statements?
Paul Lendvai: I take these statements as obvious proof that there are people and parties who have learned nothing from history. People who think this way and ridicule the heroic defense struggle of the Ukrainians do not belong in politics – they belong in psychiatrists!
How dangerous is it if the Styrian KPÖ downplays the Russian war of aggression?
I see this as a potential threat to our democracy. Many voters in Styria think they have chosen a party that is socially engaged. In fact, they voted for the pro-Russian KPÖ, which adheres to a shaky and dangerous ideology.
Why do you reject communism?
Communism justified the execution, arrest and intimidation of millions of people in Eastern and Southern Europe. I need not say more!
The KPÖ is not deterred by its scandalous deputy, which has sparked diplomatic turmoil abroad. Do you understand this determination?
Not at all! As a recipient of the Styrian State’s Gold Medal, it is particularly painful for me that such a thing is possible in this state. As a member of the state parliament you should really be there for the people – and at the same time you can’t judge people fighting for their survival that way. I marvel at the character of this man who still refuses to resign.
