Blast in the cause of politically motivated appointments at Casinos Austria: As the prosecutor for economic affairs and corruption announced via broadcast on Tuesday, Thomas Schmid, once board member of the state investment agency ÖBAG, wants to apply for leniency. Schmid played a central role in the corruption affair involving chat messages between high-ranking government members and ÖVP members, which led, among other things, to the resignation of Sebastian Kurz as chancellor, club president and party chairman.
The WKStA announced that approximately 45 suspects are currently being treated in the so-called CASAG complex, both private individuals and associations. They are being investigated on suspicion of infidelity, false testimony, corruption, bribery and abuse of public authority and breach of professional secrecy.
In the course of these investigations, Thomas Schmid approached the WKStA in April 2022 with the desire to cooperate and obtain leniency status: “In this context, a total of 15 full day interrogations have taken place at the WKStA since June 2022, during which the accused was extensively questioned.”
