He took advantage of his participation in the Asian Games to show his support for the protests over the death of young Mahsa Amini
Iranian climber Elnaz Rekabi is said to have been arrested by the Iranian regime after she competed without a hijab in South Korea’s Asian Championship of her discipline on Sunday in support of protests shaking the country over the death of young Mahsa Amini.
The Farsi-language BBC has reported that a source close to the climber has indicated that they have been unable to contact Rekabi since Sunday evening. In addition, the authorities would have confiscated the athlete’s passport and telephone number.
Rekabi was said to have been transferred directly to Khomeini International Airport — two days before the scheduled date, on Wednesday — to be taken to Evin Prison in Tehran, on behalf of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps intelligence organization, Iran Wire news portal.
The aforementioned media reports that Rejabi allegedly entered the building of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Seoul with the promise that they would return her to her country without any security concerns.
Authorities also detained the athlete’s brother, David Rekabi, whom Revolutionary Guard intelligence services have contacted, Iran Wire reported.
The mobilizations for the death of young Mahsa Amini have left more than 200 dead in the country, according to the non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights, while Tehran has accused the United States and other Western countries of inciting demonstrations.
