ÖVP affair – Haslauer: “It is a statement against a statement”

Date:

Salzburg Governor Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP) comments on the new revelations in the ÖVP affair. He sees no problem in the state elections.

After all, even in the latest revelations about the ÖVP affair of Thomas Schmid and Sebastian Kurz, there is no direct connection to Salzburg. But that is the only positive thing about the recent development of the Salzburg ÖVP. Six months before the state elections, the revelations, which increasingly resemble a mud fight, are of course not helpful.

‘It is not pleasant for the ÖVP’
Governor Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP) sees it that way. “It’s not pleasant for the ÖVP,” he says in the “Krone” interview. Haslauer was a supporter of ex-chancellor Kurz for a long time, but that seems to be over now. “It’s one word against another. Ultimately, only the courts can clarify what is true,” said the governor of Schmid’s confession and Kurz’s phone recording.

“This is now an additional facet that needs to be clarified, but perhaps also a chance that something will be picked up,” Haslauer hopes the latest findings will give impetus to the investigation. With open exit.

Affair reflects badly on politics as a whole
“I don’t rule out the possibility that something will get stuck,” says the governor. But he also emphasizes that nothing concrete is available at the moment. “Lots of proceedings have already been discontinued and there is not even a criminal complaint. I also do not rule out the abandonment of all proceedings: “Whatever the proceedings bring, the new developments again do not shed a good light on politics as a whole, which Haslauer also emphasizes: “In general, it is not good.”

Still, Haslauer does not expect the latest twist in the affair to have a major impact on the state elections in April 2023: “There is always a general vote. We are not doing well at the moment. But there is still half a year until the elections. We would do well to focus on Salzburg.”
