Today, Hernani held a memorial for the Gipuzkoans who were shot and buried in that city’s cemetery, an act organized by the Hernani City Council to “restore the memory and dignity” of all the victims.

Nearly 200 people from across Gipuzkoa were shot and buried in Hernani. As explained in today’s deed, these people were taken to Ondarreta Prison and later transferred to Hernani where they were shot and buried, all undocumented executions.

Precisely to keep the memory of these nearly 200 victims alive, the event today brought together relatives of the victims, representatives of the Basque government, the provincial council of Gipuzkoa and the city council for the sculpture ‘Argi-Horma’ in the cemetery of Hernani of Hernani and numerous civilians.

The mayor, Xabier Lertxundi, has demanded the right of the victims’ families to know the truth and has stressed the need for reparation and justice. He pointed out that today’s event is intended to be another step in that direction.

The relatives of the victims also spoke. Concha Artola, granddaughter of Miguel Artola, one of those who was shot and who was unable to meet her granddaughter, emphasizes the need to keep the memory of the victims alive: “We must never forget what happened here.” Likewise, he referred to the urgency of passing on this part of history to the new generations.

The last time the commemoration took place was in 2016 and while it was supposed to take place every four years, the 2020 commemoration has been postponed until today due to the pandemic.
