For the second time, the federal government travels to Abu Dhabi to conclude a new gas pact there. The background is the one-sided dependence on Russian supplies, which they urgently want to end. Instead, cooperation with the United Arab Emirates should be intensified.
“In addition to the stored gas reserves, the medium-term goal is to further reduce Austria’s dependence on individual suppliers. This is already a first preparatory measure for the winter of 2023/2024,” the Chancellor’s cabinet said on Monday.
Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) will travel to Abu Dhabi on October 26 – as Austria celebrates its national day – along with Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens), Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) and representatives from the business community.
In early March 2022, an Austrian delegation – then with Minister Elisabeth Köstinger – traveled to Abu Dhabi to sign a letter of intent for a bilateral hydrogen alliance.
“Important strategic partner”
“We are well prepared for the coming winter, our sheds are almost full. We have also significantly reduced our dependence on Russian gas, from 80 percent to 50 percent. We are now working on security of supply for the next heating season. The UAE is an important strategic partner for us when it comes to liquefied gas.”
