Ulster union leader Doug Petty is challenged by voter confusion in his constituency, with another Stormont candidate holding the same title.
Glenn Petty is also running in the May elections in the Bani Upper District, a socially conservative heritage party.
And what could make voters even more dizzy, the leader of the UUP is voting for a district candidate named Glenn.
This could cause problems for Doug Pete as his name was entered on the ballot between fellow party member Glenn Barris and another candidate named Petty.
Glenn Petty, the Heritage Party’s sole candidate in the election, denied that it was a deliberate tactic to halt the re-election campaign a little longer.
“No, this is not a tactic, but the start of a new party here, which is spreading across the UK and hopefully will grow over the next few years,” he said.
“I have the same surname as Doug Petty, but we have no family or political ties.”
The Heritage party, which was founded in 2020, will also nominate candidates for council elections in England and Wales in May.
Its policies include resistance to abortion and same-sex marriage and harsher penalties for hate crimes than hate crimes.
Glenn and the Northern Ireland Chapter of the Heritage Party previously shared online details of anti-abortion demonstrations involving American pastor Rusty Thomas.
Thomas, who spoke at an anti-protocol rally in Lorgan Friday, has since been criticized for earlier remarks, such as the claim that feminism brings “God’s curse upon your nation.”
Glenn said: “My relationship with Rusty Thomas is on the issue of abortion in the country and we agree with his position on this issue.
“Rusty Thomas opened Friday evening in prayer, and that was his level of participation in this procession.”
DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, TUV leader Jim Alistair and loyal activist Jimmy Bryson also spoke last week in protest of post-Brexit trade deals.
The demonstration sparked criticism after a poster of Ulster League leader Doug Petty was shown with wheat around his neck.
Sir Geoffrey and Sir Alistair had removed the poster and condemned the testimony which occurred after Mr Petty had left the gathering because they had used it to increase tensions.
There is no indication that the organizers of Friday’s protest were connected to Mr Petty’s poster.
