schmid vs. Kurz – There’s nothing left of “I love my chancellor”

Date:

It was a blast when it became known that Thomas Schmid had testified at the Economic and Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (WKStA) since June. In his statements, the ex-BAG boss places a heavy burden on many top managers, (former) politicians and his loved ones. Among them is former ÖVP chancellor Sebastian Kurz. In an interview on krone.tv with moderator Jürgen Winterleitner, krone.at editor Matthias Fuchs says there isn’t much left of Schmid’s “I love my Chancellor” chat message. There are now too deep trenches and incriminating statements between the former ÖBAG boss and the ex-chancellor. As close as the two were in the circle of power around Kurz at the time, the gap between the two now seems so wide.

Fuchs also believes that Schmid’s accusations against National Council chairman Wolfgang Sobotka could still pose problems for the Lower Austrian People’s Party. Sobotka, a former provincial councilor in black Lower Austria, is said to have tried to avoid two tax audits in this position. That is the accusation of Thomas Schmid. In Lower Austria, a new state parliament will be elected in early 2023. Schmid’s statements seem to fuel the opposition parties here.

Tension about the content of Schmid’s statement in the U-committee
According to Fuchs, it will also be interesting to see if Thomas Schmid will follow up on his 15th invitation to the U-committee on November 3. The interrogations by the WKStA have not yet been completed. The WKStA had requested consultation so as not to impede the investigation by the subcommittee’s questioning. So it remains exciting how many meaningful answers can be expected from Thomas Schmid in the U-committee.
