Ongoing Investigations – ÖVP Kurz Pays the Lawyer

Date:

The ÖVP pays the lawyer of ex-party leader Sebastian Kurz in the ongoing investigations of the economic and corruption prosecutor. The Secretary General Christian Stocker confirmed on Monday evening in the “ZiB2”.

He refers to the decision of the Federal Party Board 2020 that certain civil servants enjoy legal protection if they find themselves in the conscious situation during their work. In the “ZiB2” interview, Stocker “didn’t know by heart” who was still taking advantage of the current suspect. However, this is described in detail in the relevant decision.

Stocker does not believe that National Council chairman Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP) falls under this. Whether the ÖVP will fund Werner Suppan (Kurz’s lawyer, note) also in the case of Kurz’s conviction, “we will assess when we are at the end of the trial,” Christian Stocker said.

ÖVP stands for criminal law on corruption
According to him, this has been going on for a long time. Hopefully it will be faster to tighten criminal law on corruption. The concept for this stipulates, for example, that buying mandates must be punishable by law. According to Stocker, among other things, it must still be clear who exactly is punishable. For example, a mayor who promises to expand a bicycle path network during the election campaign may not fall under the scheme.

The fact that criminal law on corruption must be tightened is part of the coalition agreement with the Greens. Minister of Justice Alma Zadic (Greens) presented a first draft more than a year ago.
