The lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, thinks it is “advisable” that there is “a public positioning of the Spanish governmentof the parties with government responsibilities since the transition (UCD, Popular Alliance (AP), PSOE and PP), as well as of the former presidents Felipe Gonzalez and Mariano Rajoy, respectively, on statements by former Interior Minister José Barrionuevo justifying the terrorist actions of the GAL. In the governing council, Iñigo Urkullu has also opted for the powers of the state to make progress towards recognizing the victims of the GAL.

In an interview last weekend awarded to the newspaper The countryJosé Barrionuevo, sentenced to 10 years for the kidnapping of Segundo Marey by the GAL, admitted to having practiced the dirty war and ordered illegal arrests when he was minister of the interior of the government of Spain.

In the press conference after the Board of Directors, the spokesman for the Basque government said, Bingen Zupiriareported that this issue was discussed during the meeting between the councilors and Lehendakari Urkullu.

Bingen Zupiria has confirmed that the executive has shown its “complete rejection of any explicit justification” such as Barrionuevo’s over the actions of the GAL. In addition, he stressed that the second deputy lehendakari, Idoia Mendia (PSE-EE), had ratified the “clear and strong position” of the Basque socialists against the words of the former minister at the meeting of the Governing Council.

When asked if it would be possible to go to court if Barrionuevo’s words constituted a crime, he assured that those who have judicial criteria in the government and have analyzed the matter believe that “this matter could potentially be approached from the point of view of humiliation suffered by the victims of the events that have been told” by the former minister.

Zupiria has indicated that, if this were possible, it would be up to the prosecutor, on his own initiative, or to some victim of the GAL to demand that investigation. The spokesman for the Basque government has explained that in this case the executive will support “all initiatives that may arise”.
