Radioactive sea? – After the nuclear accident, a new environmental disaster threatens

Since the ecologically devastating nuclear accident on March 11, 2011, water has been pumped into the reactor ruins for improvised cooling of the molten reactor cores and fuel elements. It is precisely this water that must be discharged into the sea in July.

However, the monster tsunami also damaged the nuclear power plant built on the coast – devastating meltdowns occurred in units 1, 2 and 3, releasing huge amounts of radioactive material!

Since then, vast amounts of water stored in more than a thousand tanks on the site of the destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant have been astronomically above legal limits and life-threatening.

Safer methods possible
“The filtration system used by TEPCO, the group that owns the exploded Fukushima reactors, continues to fail. Residues in the tanks and the disastrous handling of worst-case scenarios undermine confidence in the reliability of information and plans,” warns the GLOBAL 2000. activist Reinhard Uhrig urgently. According to the internationally networked Viennese nuclear expert, the partner organization of the local NGO, the “Friends of the Earth Japan”, has long been proposing safer methods of handling the radioactive cooling water, such as concentration and solidification or storage in large tanks.

However, this was not taken into account. GLOBAL 2000 calls on the Federal Government to protest to Japanese representatives against the planned procedure and to press for alternatives to dumping the radioactive water into the Pacific through Austria’s seat in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) .
