Polaschek is in demand – violent dispute over education budget

Date:

The government will increase the education budget for 2023 by 10 percent to 11.23 billion. The budget committee will meet today – then minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) will talk specifically about figures and plans.

If you look at the budget – you see that it is now mainly a question of inflation adjustment. And in the years that followed, further cuts would be made. According to the Ministry of Finance, inflation will average 4.8 percent between 2022 and 2026. However, according to expenditure forecasts, the education budget will only be increased by 3.6 percent.

SPÖ education spokeswoman Petra Tanzler: “That means less teaching staff and less education and equal opportunities. In times like these, with a teacher shortage, investments in really big heads are especially needed here, instead there is a big minus.”

Minister of Education defends investments
The Polaschek Ministry refers to significant investments that have already been made. In addition to the 10 percent for 2023, there were 200 million recently for school equipment and 480 million during the pandemic. The criticism of the “planned” economy mode? “They are just predictions. We cannot yet know how inflation will develop in a year or two. In any case, we will observe and adapt.”
