Who has changed – 26 percent ex-Hofer voters now for Van der Bellen

According to SORA’s voter flow analysis, Alexander Van der Bellen was also able to convince a large proportion of voters who voted for FPÖ candidate Norbert Hofer in the second round of 2016. 494,000 (26 percent) of the 1.93 million Hofer voters in 2016 controlled the previous incumbent this time. 613,000 votes from Hofer voters went to FPÖ candidate Walter Rosenkranz. Van der Bellen again managed to convince 1.73 million of his 2.06 million voters in 2016.

In all, 84 percent of his 2016 voters voted again for Van der Bellen, according to the voter flow analysis, a quarter of Hofer voters in the repeat runoff election and 78,000 votes from people who didn’t go to the polls in 2016.

Rosencrantz won a third of Hofer voters
In addition to a third of Hofer voters (32 percent) in 2016, Walter Rosenkranz also won over 92,000 non-voters. Nine percent of Hofer voters (164,000) and six percent of Van der Bellen voters (132,000) voted for Dominik Wlazny, as did 48,000 non-voters.

Above all, Tassilo Wallentin managed to convince 253,000 former Hofer voters (13 percent) and 75,000 Van der Bellen voters. In addition, compared to the other candidates, there were the fewest non-voters in the second round of 2016 (12,000).

Many non-voters for Grosz
Gerald Grosz managed to convince 165,000 former Hofer voters (nine percent) and 11,000 from Van der Bellen (one percent). He also convinced 51,000 former non-voters, the third most votes of this group.

Two percent (41,000) of Norbert Hofer voters and one percent (22,000 votes) of Van der Bellen voters voted for Michael Brunner, as did 26,000 non-voters. Heinrich Staudinger received votes from 20,000 Hofer voters and 29,000 Van der Bellen voters and 14,000 from non-voters.
