The announcement of the suppression of the crime of sedition caught off guard some of the independence movement that had emerged criticism of an ERC dialogue strategy which is now endorsed with this result, although JxCat, the CUP, the ANC and Òmnium Cultural see multiple threats in this reform.

JXCAT

According to the Junts MEP Tony Comin has warned that with the new crime of aggravated public disorder “even greater atrocities than have already been committed” against the independence movement, he believes that will broaden the base of people who can be prosecutedas stated in an interview with Catalunya Ràdio collected by Europa Press.

In addition, he believes it hurts the independence movement: “I don’t care if it’s a step forward for me; it’s a step back for the independence movement.”

One of the most skeptical of this reform is the former president of Catalonia Carles Puigdemontwho, after reading the “fine print” of the proposal, perceives “traps”, such as the concepts of “harassment” and “preparatory acts”, considered in the articles, and emphasizes that in Germany the events of October 2017 in Catalonia would not be a crime “neither 15, nor 5, nor half a year’s imprisonment”.

On the other hand, the abolition of the notion means incitement for ERC “a big step forward” towards the “de-justification” of the Catalan conflict, a step that “would not have been possible without the political negotiations between the two governments and without the commitment of the ERC to the negotiated path to end the repression”, although the aim now is to make progress in the “solution of the political conflict”, in the words of the President of the Generalitat Pere Aragones.

CUP, ANC AND CULTURAL UMNIUM

The CUP has accused ERC of “selling like juggling political victories” by Sánchezor the ANC, or even Òmnium Cultural, which fears the crime of “aggravated public disorder” could serve to “pursue political dissent” and activism, “beyond independence”.

To show that they disagree with the reform of the crime of sedition, the ANC has called for a demonstration for next December 6, Constitution Day.
