The City Council of San Sebastián and the Government of Spain have agreed on the sale of the Loiola barracks. This was announced by the mayor of San Sebastián, Eneko Goia, on Tuesday. The church council is acquiring the site for a price of more than 73 million euros and the ministry is committed to giving up the current facilities within four years.

The mayor has indicated that the city council is “already working on the design of the new area”, considering a residential development that could reach 1,700 homes, the creation of new public facilities, as well as the integration of the Urumea River in the district offer great quality in this field.

Last October, the deadline for lodging an appeal against the TSJPV ruling on the Loiola Barracks expired and both the consistory and the Spanish government have appealed to the Supreme Court against the ruling of the Superior Court of Justice of the Basque Country (TSJPV ), that protected the military barracks of Loiola and prevented its demolition.

Goia then added that both sides were working on preparing the pleas, which were different but had a similar argument and were complementary. During this time, negotiations continued and both the college and city council reached an agreement.

Eneko Goia rated the acommon sense of “historic” in the full sense of the word” considering that it will be a fundamental milestone in the development of the city, “just like the purchase of the military zone of Monte Urgull and the Monastery of San Telmo by the Ministry of Defense for a hundred years past “.

Likewise, he stressed that the new area of Loiola, which will continue to develop for several years, will allow the expansion of the city along the Urumea.
