“Trust damaged” – survey: the ÖVP also crashes in the field of asylum

Date:

Difficult times for the ÖVP: only ten percent trust the chancellor’s party when it comes to migration. The party under ex-chancellor Sebastian Kurz once managed to score points in the field of asylum. Political analyst Thomas Hofer on the state of the current People’s Party: “The level of confidence has been badly damaged.”

Even renowned experts like Hofer are surprised that the ÖVP has registered a significant slump when it comes to asylum.

FPÖ ranks first when it comes to immigration
Pollster Peter Hajek asked ATV, “Which party has the best suggestions on immigration?” 34 percent believe that the FPÖ has the greatest competence in this area. 13 percent say that the SPÖ has the best proposals. The ÖVP follows in third place – 10 percent trust the Chancellor when it comes to migration.

The reasons for the crash are various. Setting up the tents, 89,876 asylum applications at the end of October, the confusion surrounding the subject of the human rights treaty. “But the trust level has been so badly damaged by the chats that such lows are possible. It is especially surprising that the ÖVP is even behind the SPÖ on this issue,” said Hofer.

Already more asylum applications than in 2015
That the number of asylum applications is rising sharply has been clear for some time – and is now also apparent from the current monthly figures of the Ministry of the Interior. The number of asylum applications this year already exceeds the total number from the year of the large migration movements in 2015, when 88,340 applications were submitted

Note: this year there are relatively fewer people in primary care. This suggests that after they have applied for asylum and been apprehended by the police, they travel on to the actual destination countries, such as France, Italy and Great Britain. In 2021, nearly 40,000 applications were submitted during the year.

FPÖ sees itself confirmed
The FPÖ sees its warnings confirmed by the figures. “As we have been drumming for months: Austria needs an immediate asylum freeze,” FPÖ security spokesman Hannes Amesbauer said in a broadcast. “Borders to illegal immigrants must finally be closed, refusals legalized and a massive deportation offensive launched – the boat is more than full,” he said.
