Cabinet hesitates – dispute about asylum quarter: solution access rights?

Date:

During the 2015 crisis, the federal government was able to host refugees across the country. At the moment, however, the government does not want to touch that.

right of access. The federal government had it in 2015: you could practically prescribe the refugees to the states. The law has been gone since 2018. Now the mayor of Traiskirchen, Andreas Babler (SPÖ), is calling for it again. Only Burgenland and Vienna meet the quota, the rest are stubborn.

A two-thirds majority is required for the right of access. It would be a useful tool for Secretary of the Interior Gerhard Karner. His ÖVP general Christian Stocker says: “We don’t need the competence at the moment. We can find a solution for permanent housing in consultation.”

The Greens say: nothing. They refer to positive conversations in the federal states in Burgenland. It’s about more money for landlords. The SPÖ understands Babler, but still says: “Karner failed across the board and caused this chaos in the accommodation. Therefore, he should not be equipped with extra powers.”

The FPÖ is also against the right of access. Albeit for different reasons. Security spokesman Hannes Amesbauer: “We already have more than 100,000 refugees. More are added every hour. It would be better for the Minister of the Interior to take action at the borders.” The NEOS, on the other hand, has been demanding a right of action for weeks. Stephanie Krisper: “Then the Minister of the Interior could finally take action. Because the ÖVP states do not keep their promise to accommodate people. It’s only about a few thousand people. That should be possible.”
