Harkaitz Millan, responsible for Culture, Youth and Sport of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Councilhe has resigned from his post this Sunday after he was arrested for attack on authority tonight in Donostia-San Sebastián, as confirmed by EITB Media.
The PSE of Gipuzkoa confirmed Millán’s resignation, citing “personal reasons”, in a note sent to the media.
Millán is replaced in the post by Maria Jose Telleria Etxeberria, current general director of Culture in the Provincial Council. Etxeberria is from Eibar, is 51 years old and has a degree in journalism. She was a councilor in Eibar between 1999 and 2015, before being appointed Director of Culture.
Millán was said to have been kicked out of a pub in the old part of San Sebastián this morning for “abuse of a woman” to whom “he allegedly insulted”. Once evicted by members of security, Millán is said to have confronted the ertzaintza officers who arrived on the scene, for which they arrested him on charges of a crime of assault on authority and he was transferred to the police station.
Strong condemnation of Deputy General Markel Olano
After the resignation was made public, the deputy general of Gipuzkoa, Mark Olanohas a spread press release explaining that “”in view of the serious events that occurred last night in Donostia, he has decided to accept his resignation immediately”.
The deputy general has strongly condemned the events and has stated through this statement that his government has done so years of work for an exemplary Gipuzkoa and Provincial Government, in which such attitudes have no place. “They have no place and will never have a place, either in the territory as a whole or in the government of the Provincial Council,” he claimed.
In this sense, Olano recalled that in 2016 the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council issued a Institutional Integrity System with Codes of Ethics the observance of which is mandatory for all members of the Provincial Council and senior officials, and whose development has moreover been a reference for other administrations.
“In light of the principles embodied in these codes, events such as last night’s are totally unacceptable and attack the principles of integrity, exemplary character, coexistence and respect that should guide the conduct of every public representative in an impeccable manner. control.” the note says.
