Judith Schwentner – The biggest castles in the sky from the Graz Greens boss

Date:

Green politician Judith Schwentner: She announced a lot, but hardly carried out anything. And: how the deputy mayor of Graz wants to ban cars from the capital.

The Greens of Graz have seen better days. The governing coalition, in which Judith Schwentner sits as deputy mayor, is in a financial debacle and the house blessing is more crooked than ever. In addition, Schwentner has fooled motorists: the fact that she wants to ban motor vehicles from the city not only causes many commuters to shake their heads, but also Graz business people who depend on suppliers, for example.

Much more serious, however, is the fact that the leader of the Greens is also facing strong headwinds from the base. Tenor: much promised, hardly performed! In fact, most of the eco-frontwoman’s announcements turn out to be castles in the air. Have a read. . .

Expansion of public transport
A tram line to the University of Graz has been discontinued, a tram across Griesplatz is unsafe and the loudly announced S-Bahn tunnel is no more than a narrow-gauge variant. In addition, the project will not be implemented until 2040; the major traffic problems in the capital remain unsolved for the time being.

But, and to be fair, Schwentner has to credit this to his “deposit account”: at a meeting in Vienna, Minister Leonore Gewessler promised her Styrian party friend at least money for the Bim expansion.

cycling offensive
A few hundred meters of cycle path – as recently on the quay – is not enough, especially in the city center everything is a patchwork. The former cycling capital of Austria is now in danger of falling behind.

construction stop
The Greens, like the SPÖ and KPÖ, promised a building freeze – and thus won the elections. Empty promises, say critics of the left government. There is nothing to say about fewer cranes or construction sites than under Mayor Siegfried Nagl (“Concrete-Siegi”).

Green Grass
Even the green dreams of a greener Mur metropolis are in danger of falling apart. There is nothing to see of the promised “17 green miles” (one in each district), nor of large-scale tree plantations or green facades.

Information about the construction site
Many entrepreneurs also complain that they are not aware of planned large construction sites in the city. Construction will begin in March – but nothing has been heard from Schwentner yet.
