Britain’s Court of Appeal, in its civil division, on Tuesday granted King Emeritus Juan Carlos I immunity for his actions up to the time of his abdication in 2014, in the trial against him in the United Kingdom for alleged harassment to which he subdued his ex-lover, Corinna Zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn.
The court has recognized the appeal of the emeritus to justify that his actions between April 2012 and June 18, 2014 did not belong to his private sphere, so that it is appropriate to grant him immunity during that period. The trial against him could continue for his actions after his abdication.
“Very limited” immunity according to Corinna’s defense
The ex-lover’s defense has insisted that it granted immunity for her actions until her abdication only “relates to a very limited case”.
In a statement, lawyer Michael Kim welcomed the fact that the lawsuit “may now progress to a trial in London’s High Court”, recalling that “the majority of the trial, from 2014, is unaffected and should go to trial”.
According to him, his client’s lawsuit “contains very serious allegations of harassment that have gone on for a long time, which will be investigated in detail when the trial takes place.”
