Closing in January – projects at a standstill: Coalition construction sites

Date:

The ÖVP and the Greens still have to work for almost two years. The Greens want to promote environmental issues as much as possible. The government team will hold a working retreat in January.

They wanted “the best of both worlds” – but the turquoise-green government has never really reached full capacity since being sworn in in January 2020. Although the ÖVP and the Greens have been forced into a permanent crisis mode by the pandemic and the war, fundamental differences in content mean that government projects are stalling or even failing.

The reform of unemployment benefits has been called off
Unemployment benefit reform was called off last week due to disagreements in the coalition. This is not the only government construction site. There are “crumbs” in two main areas: justice and transparency, and climate protection.

Edtstadler and Zadić in a permanent clash
Ministers Karoline Edtstadler and Alma Zadić have a particularly tense relationship. This shows va about legal issues. The constitutional minister of the ÖVP and the minister of green justice are struggling to introduce a new federal prosecutor.

Environment Ministry Leonore Gewessler has been struggling for two years with a blockade of the climate protection law by the ÖVP. The Sustainable Heat Act, which provides for the phasing out of oil and gas heating, is already before the House of Representatives, but has not yet found a majority there and will therefore be postponed.

No one in the coalition is currently thinking about new elections
Even if the differences on individual points are huge, there is no doubt that the coalition will last until 2024. The reason is a simple power technique that speaks out against new elections. In a traffic light coalition, the Greens would be just one of two crown princesses alongside the Neos. Now the Greens are the only crown princess.

To show the unity, another chancellor’s meeting is scheduled in the coming weeks, at which Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens) should also be present. After the Christmas holidays, the work program for 2023 will be presented at the cabinet meeting in Harmonie.
