Ukraine must prepare for cuts in US aid after newly-elected US President Donald Trump takes office. In an interview with NBC on Sunday, the Republican described it as “likely” that the US will cut aid to the country.
Asked whether his administration would cut aid to Ukraine, Trump replied: “Potentially. Yes, probably, definitely.”
Main supporter against Russia
The US is Ukraine’s main supporter in the defensive war against Russia. The interview with NBC took place on Friday, a day before Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris on Saturday.
After the Paris meeting, Trump called for an “immediate ceasefire” on his online service Truth Social and appealed to Kiev and Moscow to begin negotiations. “Zelensky and Ukraine would like to make a deal and put an end to the madness,” Trump said. If the war continues, “it could become something much bigger and much worse.”
Settlement with Russia?
During the election campaign, Trump voiced his opposition to billions in aid to Ukraine and stated that if he won the election, he would end the war within one day before taking office on January 20. Critics say the deal he is pursuing with Russia could force Ukraine to give up some Russian-occupied territories.
Trump threatens to leave NATO
Trump once again caused unrest when it came to NATO. He again threatened that the US would leave the alliance if the other allies stopped spending on defense. “They have to pay their bills,” Trump said in an interview with NBC News published Sunday. He added that he would “absolutely” consider a U.S. exit from the military alliance if NATO allies did not treat the U.S. “fairly.”
