Every year again. During wage negotiations, trade unionists and employers try to agree on whether and how much workers and white-collar workers should earn more. This year is harder than ever. Because everything has become so much more expensive. But behind it is the Austrian model of social partnership. This has to prove itself more than ever.
1) Social partnership, what is it? Basically it is a network of the three big “chambers” (labour, economic and agricultural chambers), the trade unions organized in the ÖGB and also the industrial association. The social partners represent the interests of the main professional groups in Austria. They try to compromise on minimum wages and wage increases. They want to reach an agreement through negotiations – without fighting with strikes and demonstrations or shutting out the staff.
