Austria’s Schengen veto splits the SPÖ. Party leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner is criticized in the party. The governor of Burgenland, Hans Peter Doskozil, observes the spectacle from the outside.
It is almost a unique event: SPÖ leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner and Hans Peter Doskozil would probably be on a common course – but now the governor of Burgenland has been ducking for days. Following multiple requests from the “Krone”, there is no statement from Doskozil on the Schengen veto. Not yet, as his press team points out.
Much criticism of the leader
Since Rendi-Wagner supported the ÖVP course on the Schengen veto, she has endured a lot of criticism. The mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig, rode into the parade. He said that “Austria should not take too many steps in the EU that isolates us so much”. Traiskirchen’s SPÖ mayor, Andreas Babler, also condemned Austria’s veto and thus his party leader’s line. Ex-chancellor Christian Kern accused Rendi-Wagner of being “an accomplice of populist stupidity” in a less than charming way.
Actually, the attempt to put pressure on the asylum issue through the veto card in the EU should be in the spirit of Doskozil. The otherwise eloquent governor is very quiet. “It is of course double work for him. Presumably he should support the course. But he probably does not want to support Rendi-Wagner, and he does not want to jump behind his party leader on this issue,” says political analyst Thomas Hofer.
Perhaps the reason for Doskozil’s hesitation is much simpler. It could well be, the Pannonian power politician enjoys not having to feel the wind against him.
