EU sanctions – Austrians show little solidarity by comparison

In a recent survey, Austrians show less solidarity in supporting Ukraine after the Russian invasion than the EU average. While three-quarters of the EU population (74 percent) approve, in Austria it is only 60 percent. EU sanctions against Russia are approved by 73 percent of respondents across the EU, compared to only 57 percent in Austria.

In the Eurobarometer survey commissioned by the European Parliament, support for Ukraine was particularly popular in Sweden (97 percent), Finland (95 percent), the Netherlands (93 percent), Portugal (92 percent) and Denmark (92 percent). Trailing behind in support to Ukraine are Greece (46 percent), Slovakia (47 percent) and Cyprus (48 percent).

Bottom when asked about EU gains
Austria lags behind when it comes to whether its own country has benefited from EU membership. 55 percent of Austrians see an advantage in the EU, 38 percent see none. On average across the EU, 72 percent of respondents said their country had benefited from EU membership.

The benefits of the EU are particularly strong in Malta (95 percent), Ireland (92 percent) and in Luxembourg and Lithuania (91 percent each).

The majority expect noticeable consequences
Among the values ​​that the European Parliament should defend as a priority according to respondents, democracy comes first (36%), followed by the protection of human rights in the EU and worldwide (29%) and freedom of expression (28% ). ).

The consequences of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine are clearly felt by the citizens of the EU. Almost two-thirds of the EU population (65 percent) believe their lives will be changed by the war and its aftermath. That is four percentage points more than in April and May.
