The last session of the National Council at the Hofburg in Vienna concluded on Thursday with the traditional Christmas speech by the chairman of the National Council. In it, Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP) also practiced silent self-criticism. In recent debates, many speakers expressed their expectations about future work in the renovated Parliament Building on the Ring. The return will be celebrated there on January 12 with a ceremony.
This return to the newly renovated building could be used “as an opportunity for me” to better highlight the dignity of the house, said National Council chairman Wolfgang Sobotka. He previously praised SPÖ integration spokesman Nurten Yilmaz, who left on Wednesday, for her respectful treatment of others, admitting that “sometimes it was a bit more intense” and “sometimes I could have been the cause of it”. For this, Sobotka received loud applause from the deputies.
Thank you SPÖ politicians
In his speech he also thanked everyone who was involved in the renovation, the move, the smooth work in the emergency areas and who are now involved in the return. Sobotka specifically mentioned SPÖ National Council President Barbara Prammer, who died in 2014 and began the redesign process with “great caution” in 2010, and her successor Doris Bures, under whom the temporary home in the Hofburg was built in 2017. found it.
The fact that not all MPs are always satisfied with Sobotka’s office behavior became clear during one of the last debates in the Redoutensaal – the first reading on the FPÖ motion, which wants to create the possibility to appoint presidents of the National Council. There will be no majority, and certainly not the constitutional majority that is actually needed. The SPÖ also thinks nothing of it, although they also accused the chairman of the National Council of partisan chairmanship of the U committee or a general lack of impartiality.
More money for soldiers and civil servants
The latest legislative decision in temporary housing brought young men with considerably higher salaries: from 1 January, military personnel will receive 261.97 euros instead of the former 124.22 euros basic salary, for an assignment (e.g. at the border) this will be up to 572.11 euros. The compensation for civil servants was increased from almost 363 to 536.10 euros, plus the cost of meals as before.
